Burgess Is Out Again

Philadelphia Eagle defensive end Derrick Burgess tore his Achilles’ tendon in practice Friday and is expected to sit out the season.

Burgess, a third-round pick in 2001, sat out 15 games and the playoffs after breaking his foot against Tennessee last September. After two operations, he worked his way back onto the field and earned a starting spot at left defensive end with an outstanding training camp.

The Eagles quickly replaced Burgess, signing Marco Coleman to a one-year deal. Coleman, 6 feet 3 and 270 pounds, was a Pro Bowl selection in 2000 with Washington.

Tampa Bay middle linebacker Shelton Quarles will have surgery on his broken left forearm and elbow today and is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks. The Buccaneers also released tight end Tony McGee and signed tight end Daniel Wilcox.... Middle linebacker Rob Morris, who underwent minor knee surgery about a month ago, is expected to start Sunday in the Indianapolis Colts’ season-opener against Cleveland.... The Washington Redskins’ 16-13 win over the New York Jets on Thursday drew a 12.9 rating and a 22 share, and was seen in 19.2 million homes. ABC’s Monday night games last season averaged 17.1 million homes for an 11.4 rating.
