Philadelphia Phillie right-hander Terry Adams might need season-ending surgery on his right elbow.

Adams had X-rays and an MRI exam on the elbow Tuesday, and team doctor Michael Ciccotti recommended arthroscopic surgery to repair the “loose bodies” that were found.

Adams was put on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 27 because of a strained left oblique muscle, then was activated Sept. 11.

He has a 1-4 record and a 2.65 earned-run average in a team-high 66 games.

Trot Nixon hopes his strained left calf will heal enough for him to resume playing by Thursday.

Gabe Kapler has started in Nixon’s place in right field for the Boston Red Sox, who lead the Seattle Mariners by 2 1/2 games in the American League wild-card race.

Nixon sees no need to rush back. He has been out of the starting lineup for six games, and Kapler has played well in his absence.

“It’s not like they’re in dire straits right now that they need my bat by any means,” Nixon said. “They’re scoring runs and they’re playing good defense.”
