The Los Angeles Times on Tuesday announced the debut of a weekly high school sports report called Campus Times.

Beginning today, the tabloid section, written and edited by the newspaper’s sports staff, will cover high school sports and athletes, local extreme sports and some club sports.

The weekly tabloid will be distributed free of charge at more than 50 high school campuses in Orange County; it will not be included in the full newspaper.

“Introducing young readers to the Los Angeles Times is one of our top priorities,” said Times Publisher John P. Puerner. “The launch of Campus Times in Orange County is the first phase of a strategic initiative to cultivate future readers by developing a strong brand identity with high school readers.”

Future editions of Campus Times, he said, will be introduced in other areas of Southern California in phases through next year.
