A mummified body was discovered in a garage nearly three weeks after a fire destroyed a home and killed an elderly couple, authorities said.
An attorney representing the couple’s estate found the body in a 55-gallon drum Friday as he went through some of their belongings, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s investigator said. An autopsy will be conducted to identify the body and determine the cause of death.
Virginia Beiser, 85, and Robert Adams, 84, died March 15 after a fire gutted their home. Fire officials said they died of smoke inhalation, and the blaze likely was caused by a cigarette.
The garage, where the body was found, was not damaged.
