All-State Team Has Plenty of Local Flavor

Josh Shipp and Arron Afflalo, who led their respective boys’ basketball teams, Los Angeles Fairfax and Compton Centennial, to state titles in Divisions I and III, were named to the CalHi Sports’ all-state team, along with seven other Southland players.

Also on the 10-player first team were seniors Jordan Farmar of Woodland Hills Taft, the City Section champion; Gabriel Pruitt of L.A. Westchester; Bryce Taylor of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake; Nick Young of Reseda Cleveland, and Lorenzo Mata of South Gate.

Sacramento Sheldon’s DeMarcus Nelson, a 6-foot-3 senior guard who was named state player of the year, was also selected to the first team, along with seniors Robert Swift of Bakersfield and Quintin Thomas of Oakland Tech.

Local second-team selections were junior Bryan Harvey and senior LaMar Roberson of Compton Dominguez, who led the Dons to the state Division II title; senior Marcel Jones of Santa Ana Mater Dei, and junior Jamal Boykin of Fairfax.

Local third-team selections were seniors Tyler Smith of Santa Margarita, David Burgess of Irvine Woodbridge and Marcus Fields of Long Beach Poly, along with junior Marcus Johnson of Westchester.

Northern California may have swept five state titles, but seven Southern Californians, including five from the Southland, were named to the CalHi Sports’ all-state girls’ team.

Leading the way on the 10-player first team are seniors Sade Wiley-Gatewood of Lynwood, Judith Smith of Long Beach Poly, Lindsey Pluimer of San Clemente and Erin Myrick of La Puente Bishop Amat, the only one to reach a state final. Also included is junior Ashlee Trebilcock of Newhall Hart.

Charde Houston, who led San Diego to an upset of Long Beach Poly in the Division I Southern Regional, and Candice Wiggins of La Jolla Country Day were also selected, along with Stockton St. Mary’s sophomore Jacki Gemelos, Oakland Technical junior Devanei Hampton and Piedmont junior Courtney Paris. Wiggins, a 5-11 forward headed to Stanford, was the state player of the year.

Local second-team selections were junior Erika Arriaran of Norco, Brynn Cameron of Newbury Park, Lauren Pedersen of Brea Olinda, Meghan McGuire of Fullerton Troy and Lorie Rayford of Inglewood Morningside.

Local third-team selections were Jeanine Deno of La Crescenta Crescenta Valley, Camille LeNoir of Harbor City Narbonne, Brittany Dove of Long Beach Millikan and Brandi Kimble of Lynwood.

LeNoir, Pruitt, Young and Mata are scheduled to participate in an all-star doubleheader featuring seniors from the City Section on Sunday at Staples Center. The girls’ all-star game begins at 1 p.m. and the boys’ game follows at 2:30 p.m.

Baseball

Brad Meyers threw a two-hitter and struck out 11 for Anaheim Servite in a 9-0 Serra League victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei on Wednesday.

The Friars (10-5, 2-4 in league), ranked No. 14 in the Southland by The Times, had won four in a row before losing to the Monarchs, 6-0, on Monday.

Scott Schauer had two doubles, two runs batted in and scored three times and teammate Alex Maldonado had two hits and two RBIs.

Mater Dei, ranked No. 10, falls to 9-5, 4-2.

Brian Bird (5-0) threw a four-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Thousand Oaks to a 5-1 Marmonte League victory over Simi Valley Royal.

David Fonseca had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Lancers (11-3, 6-1), who have won six in a row. Royal falls to 8-6, 4-3.

Steve Taylor (3-1) gave up two hits and struck out 10 in four innings to help San Pedro defeat Riverside La Sierra, 13-4, in the title game of the Newport Harbor tournament.

Taylor also had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs for the Pirates (14-3).

Swimming

The season debut of senior Courtney Cashion with the Irvine girls’ team proved most successful.

She won the 100-meter butterfly, the 100 backstroke and was on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams for the Vaqueros (4-1, 3-0), who defeated Irvine Woodbridge, 115-55, in a Sea View League matchup at Irvine University.

Cashion, who was The Times’ 2002 girls’ swimmer of the year, had been academically ineligible until this week.

Golf

Newhall Hart, ranked No. 2 by The Times, will be among the 40 teams in the Oak Park Spring Invitational that begins at 1 p.m. today at Sterling Hills Golf Club in Camarillo.

Joining the Indians, who are led by junior Joe Greiner, in the 40-team field will be No. 8 Manhattan Beach Mira Costa and No. 9 La Canada.

Greiner used a nine iron for a hole-in-one on the 165-yard No. 17 at Le Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara on Tuesday in Hart’s 369-378 nonleague victory over Santa Barbara San Marcos.
