Cost Estimates Rise for New Span of Bay Bridge
The new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will be more costly than originally estimated.
The seismic retrofit was supposed to cost $1.1 billion. But now it is estimated at about $5.1 billion, according to a confidential Caltrans report obtained by the Contra Costa Times.
The report says the total bill to fix key transportation arteries is now $8.3 billion, about $3 billion more than estimated just three years ago. Caltrans said it had no money to pay for the projects, so it would give the new tally to the Legislature this week.
