Here, in capsule form, are the events that will be highlighted today in Athens:

The United States and Mexico can clinch places in the quarterfinals today with victories in Thessaloniki and Patras, respectively.

The U.S., which opened with a 3-0 victory over Greece, plays Brazil, which edged Australia, the other team in the group, 1-0, on a goal by 18-year-old star-in-the-making Marta.

Brazil has beaten the U.S. only once in 19 matches -- in 1997 in Sao Paulo.

A victory by Mexico in its opener against China would send Coach Leo Cuellar’s team to the last eight and almost certainly eliminate the Chinese from the tournament. China was thrashed, 8-0, by Germany in its first game and must win to stay alive.

Japan can also reach the quarterfinals today if it defeats or ties Nigeria in Athens.
