Share

Some New York breds familiar with the winner’s circle will get together in today’s $65,000 John Morrisey at Saratoga.

The 6 1/2 -furlong race drew nine veterans who have combined for 41 victories in 196 starts, topped by the seven wins of Top Shoter.

A 5-year-old gelded son of Ormsby owned and trained by Charlton Baker, Top Shoter has earned his wins in only 14 starts and has been especially effective at Saratoga.

When the dark bay won at nearly 8-1 odds against open company July 31, it gave him a record of four wins in five starts at the track. He will break from post six in search of his second win in as many tries at today’s distance.

The Morrisey will mark the return of Traffic Chief, a 4-year-old Colonial Affair colt who has won five of seven for owner Barry Schwartz and trainer Michael Hushion.

Idle since finishing sixth in the Empire Classic at Belmont Park on Oct. 18, Traffic Chief has trained well for his return and he won the Albany at Saratoga last year.

The field is completed by Beau Tie, Will’s Journey, who has won two in a row for trainer H. James Bond, Uncle Camie, Go Rockin’ Robin, No Parole, Affair In The Air and Clever Electrician.

Race of the day: Gent, who scored in his first start after a claim by trainer Bill Spawr, will aim for a repeat in today’s seventh at Del Mar. Leading rider Tyler Baze will be aboard the 5-year-old Mr. Greeley horse for owners Sid and Jenny Craig in the $58,000 optional claimer at 1 3/8 miles on the turf.

One for the road: Comanche Star makes her first start for trainer Laurie Lafavers, who does well with a limited number of starters, and she cuts back to seven furlongs in the $45,000 maiden affair at Saratoga after being idle since June 12.
