Connecticut Is in Control Despite Its 33 Turnovers

Despite a season-high 33 turnovers, No. 4-ranked Connecticut defeated No. 22 Miami, 83-65, Sunday in its first game since beating No. 1 Tennessee.

“I think we were in a little bit of a hurry to hurry up and get it done,” said Connecticut Coach Geno Auriemma, whose team made only eight turnovers in its victory over the Lady Vols on Thursday. “It was good for us to see that’s not us. We can’t play quicker than a quick team. That’s not our style.”

Connecticut’s Diana Taurasi had 21 points and six steals, but she also had a team-high eight turnovers in the Big East game at Storrs, Conn. Ashley Battle had a career-high 18 points for the Huskies (18-2, 8-1).

Chanivia Broussard led Miami (16-4, 5-4) with 20 points.

Miami scored 20 points off Connecticut turnovers, and the Huskies scored 24 points off of Miami’s 23 miscues.

No. 1 Tennessee 72, South Carolina 58 -- Shyra Ely had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Vols (19-2, 8-0 Southeastern Conference) over the league’s last-place Gamecocks (9-12, 0-8) at Knoxville, Tenn.

No. 13 Minnesota 74, No. 5 Penn State 56 -- After falling behind by one point with 9:56 to play, the Golden Gophers (18-3, 7-3 Big Ten) went on a 12-2 run to beat the Nittany Lions (18-4, 10-1) at Minneapolis.

No. 6 Purdue 57, Ohio State 54 -- The Boilermakers (19-2, 9-1 Big Ten) outscored the Buckeyes (13-8, 5-5), 20-4, during an 11-minute stretch spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second half to take control at West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue’s Shereka Wright scored 19 points and joined MaChelle Joseph and Stephanie White as the only players in Purdue history to score 2,000 points.

No. 9 Texas Tech 62, No. 17 Baylor 59 -- Alesha Robertson had a game-high 25 points and teammate Chesley Dabbs scored a putback with 32 seconds left to lift the Red Raiders (20-3, 6-3 Big 12) at Waco, Texas. Sophia Young paced the Bears (17-5, 5-4) with 19 points.

No. 10 Kansas State 79, No. 11 Colorado 53 -- The Wildcats (17-3, 8-1 Big 12) never trailed as Kendra Wecker had 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in their victory over the Buffaloes (18-3, 7-2) at Manhattan, Kan.

North Carolina State 62, No. 12 North Carolina 54 -- Kaayla Chones scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half to push the Wolfpack (13-11, 5-6 Atlantic Coast) over the Tar Heels (18-4, 8-3) at Chapel Hill, N.C. It was N.C. State’s first win over North Carolina since a 66-63 victory Jan. 10, 2002.

No. 19 Auburn 68, No. 14 Louisiana State 50 -- Auburn (18-5, 6-3 Southeastern) closed the game with a 15-5 run to defeat LSU (18-4, 6-2) at Auburn, Ala.

No. 15 DePaul 61, Marquette 59 -- Charlene Smith had 17 points and made a five-foot shot with one second left to lift the Blue Demons (20-2, 18-1 Conference USA) over the Golden Eagles (16-6, 6-3) at Chicago. Consecutive layups for Marquette had tied it, 59-59, with 13 seconds remaining.

Arkansas 71, No. 16 Georgia 63 -- The Razorbacks (14-7, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) outscored the Bulldogs (16-6, 5-4), 9-1, down the stretch to win at Fayetteville, Ark.

No. 18 Texas Christian 76, Southern Mississippi 45 -- The Horned Frogs (18-4, 7-2 Conference USA) took advantage of 23 turnovers by the Golden Eagles (14-8, 2-7) to win at Fort Worth.

No. 20 Michigan State 70, Northwestern 46 -- The Spartans (18-4, 8-3 Big Ten) limited an opponent to fewer than 50 points for the 11th time this season in the victory over the Wildcats (7-15, 0-11).

Seton Hall 51, No. 23 Notre Dame 45 -- Reserve center LaNedra Brown scored all 10 of her points in the final 9:21 to lead the Pirates (13-8, 5-5 Big East) over the Fighting Irish (14-8, 7-3) at South Orange, N.J. Notre Dame’s Jacqueline Batteast, who was in foul trouble all game, finished with nine points.

No. 24 Florida 76, Kentucky 56 -- Ranked for the first time in two seasons, the Gators (16-5, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) wasted little time justifying their status with a rout of the Wildcats (9-14, 1-9) at Gainesvile, Fla.
