When you have faced down a Fighting Frog, how excited can you get over playing a dog? For Ojai Thacher, which plays a Southern Section Division V-AA semifinal tonight at Redondo against the Palos Verdes Estates Rolling Hills Prep Huskies, it will be tough.

The defending champion Toads are coming off a 58-46 victory over the Ribet Academy Fighting Frogs.

Second-seeded Thacher is led by 6-2 senior center Whitney Livermore and 6-1 senior forward Steffi Rauner. The Toads are trying to get to the finals for the second year in a row but must do so against a Rolling Hills Prep team that has a 14-1 record.

L.A. Notre Dame Academy hadn’t beaten Pasadena La Salle in more than four seasons. The Regals had no luck in two Sunshine League attempts this season, but on Friday, when it mattered most, they came through with a 1-0 victory in a Southern Section Division V quarterfinal playoff game at Brentwood.

Senior forward Kendall Doherty scored off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Miranda Moriarty in the ninth minute. Notre Dame Academy (14-6-1) will play either Cerritos Valley Christian or Big Bear, which play today at 2 p.m., in the semifinals.

“It’s hard to beat a team three times in a season,” Notre Dame Academy Coach Marc Argoud said.

Defending Division II champion Westlake Village Westlake was knocked out of the playoffs Friday by Brea Olinda (21-4-3) in a shootout. After a 3-3 draw, sixth-ranked Westlake (18-2-2) converted on only one penalty kick in falling, 3-1.

San Pedro (16-4-4), the No. 5-seeded team in the City Section playoffs, will be without three starters when it plays at top-seeded Canoga Park (17-1-2) in a semifinal game Monday at 3 p.m.

That’s because midfielder Dustin Castania, goalkeeper Logan Adams and defender Mike Martinez were issued red cards in the Pirates’ 3-2 overtime victory at Reseda in a quarterfinal Thursday.

Castania and Adams were issued red cards for using improper language near the end of the second half and Martinez received a red card after running into Reseda goalkeeper Tony Santana while going for a ball in overtime.

“We’re going to have to go to our bench,” first-year San Pedro Coach Paul Butterfield said. “But we have a deep bench, so we should be fine.”
