Five teams, led by Fountain Valley, enter the rankings this week. The Barons lost to Anaheim Esperanza, 1-0, in the championship game of the Huntington Beach Marina tournament Monday. Los Angeles Loyola, which dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 2 Santa Ana Mater Dei for its only loss, defeated La Canada St. Francis, 4-2, in the championship game of the South Torrance tournament Dec. 23. Simi Valley Royal defeated La Verne Damien, 3-1, in the final of the Upland tournament Monday while Huntington Beach Edison improved to 11-0 with a 2-0 victory against Santa Ana in the championship game of the Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills tournament.

After a relatively quiet week, seven of last week’s top-10 teams played Monday at the Santa Ana Foothill tournament. Huntington Beach Edison became the first team to 10 victories, advancing to the tournament quarterfinals with victories over Fullerton Rosary and Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills. Santa Margarita became the second 10-win team with a 2-1, second-round victory over Placentia El Dorado. Fullerton Sunny Hills joins the rankings after Long Beach Wilson fell in the first round of the Foothill tournament.

No. 1 Santa Ana Foothill retained its claim to the top spot in the rankings by winning the Newport Harbor/Corona del Mar tournament for the third consecutive season. The Knights, who have won 47 games in a row, beat No. 2 Santa Barbara, 10-7, in the championship match. Newport Harbor stays at No. 4 behind idle Long Beach Wilson after finishing third in the tournament. Corona del Mar beat Poway and Huntington Beach Edison but lost to Foothill and Newport Harbor and moves up despite the defeats to the No. 6 spot, formerly occupied by Santa Margarita, which fell into the consolation bracket after a quarterfinal loss to Newport Harbor and drops to No. 9 behind idle Upland and Los Alamitos.

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel and Laguna Hills will take on tournament host Chino Hills Ayala today and Saturday. Moving into the rankings after a second-place finish in the Rosemead tournament is Riverside La Sierra. Temecula Valley will get its next test when it takes on Temescal Canyon in a dual meet next Thursday. La Sierra, Rosemead, San Clemente and Downey will join host North Torrance as the featured teams this weekend.
