A little more than a week after telling her teammates she would probably sit out the remainder of the season, Long Beach Wilson senior stopper Kelly Little has returned to the team, Coach Dalton Kaufman said.

Little, a Times’ All-Star selection last season, said she had earlier decided to quit because of a nagging hip injury and “frustration of working so hard and not getting where I wanted with the team.”

Wilson is 9-3-1, having won the consolation championship at Santa Ana Foothill Excalibur tournament last week.

Gary Campbell, who coached Norco to the Mountain View League title and the Southern Section Division V championship game last month, resigned as football coach after 34 seasons.

Athletic Director Ben Gonzalez said Campbell planned to teach one more year at the school but resigned the coaching position for personal reasons.

Campbell began his coaching career at Banning in 1969 but took over at Norco in 1970. His career record is 279-115-4, including a 12-2 mark this season, and his teams have appeared in six section finals, winning three.

The Cougars fell in the Division V final this season, 50-7, to Riverside North, which finished as The Times’ top-ranked team.

Armando Gonzalez is leaving San Juan Capistrano Serra High after one season to become the head coach at Dana Point Dana Hills. Gonzalez, who led Los Angeles Franklin to 17 consecutive playoff appearances and four City Section titles, becomes Dana Hills’ fourth football coach in four years.

Serra, a new private school in South Orange County, has not begun playing varsity competition. The school attempted to gain instant credibility by hiring several high-profile coaches, but two of them, Gonzalez and track coach Aaron Craver, a former NFL player, have left the school.

Gonzalez replaces Bobby Hughes, who led Dana Hills to a 2-8 overall record.

Mater Dei is looking forward to a lighter playing schedule this month. After playing 14 games in December, including trips to Kentucky and Texas, the Monarchs are looking forward to only seven games.

Mater Dei (12-2), ranked No. 3 in the Southland by The Times, could use the break to get well.

Chris Henry, a 6-foot-10 senior, sprained his ankle on Dec. 29 during a loss to L.A. Fairfax in a semifinal game of the Houston tournament and is not expected to play tonight, Coach Gary McKnight said, adding that he hopes Henry will return for the Serra League opener against Anaheim Servite on Jan. 14 at Santa Ana College.

Woodland Hills Taft trailed Reseda Cleveland by one point with 1.9 seconds left in a West Valley League boys’ basketball opener. Cleveland had the ball out of bounds under its own basket.

“We were dead in the water,” Taft Coach Derrick Taylor said.

But the inbound pass went over the head of Cleveland’s Nick Young and out of bounds without touching him, giving Taft possession under the Cleveland basket with 1.9 seconds still remaining.

Alex Drob made a half-court pass to Jordan Farmar, who caught the ball over his head like a wide receiver. Farmar was frantically proceeding down the left side of the court when he ran into Cleveland’s Corey Duncan. The referee blew his whistle with 0.01 seconds left, calling a blocking foul on Duncan.

Farmar went to the free throw line for two shots. He swished both, and Taft came away with a 61-60 victory.

“I was just going to find a way to win,” Farmer said.

Farmar finished with 24 points for Taft (11-2). Young scored 21 points for Cleveland (13-3).

The teams meet again Jan. 16 at Cleveland.
