A Glendale police officer who lost control of her car while chasing a motorcyclist suffered serious injuries Wednesday night when she collided with another vehicle.

The accident occurred at 8:40 p.m. at Verdugo Road and York Boulevard in Glassell Park, police said. The badly damaged police vehicle rolled to a stop at a gas station. Firefighters worked for more than 20 minutes to remove the officer from the wreckage.

Leonard Diaz, who lives near the crash site, was among the first people at the scene. “I heard the siren and then I heard the crash,” Diaz said. “It was this female officer and she had this glazed look and she said, ‘Help me.’ I told her, “You’re going to be all right.”

The people in the other car suffered minor injuries, Glendale Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Doyle said.

The police officer was not identified.

The motorcyclist who was being chased sped from the scene, then abandoned the motorcycle near Occidental College and tried to hide. Police found the suspect less than an hour later and arrested him.
