Upset by Virgil Is Key to Big Pick Six Payoff

Thanks to some major upsets, primarily 30-1 outsider Virgil in the first leg, Robert O’Connor was the only winner of the pick six Saturday night.

O’Connor, 70, from Long Beach, won $101,526 -- before taxes -- and had 10 consolation tickets worth $1,966.80 apiece.

“This money is for my retirement,” he said. “The first race was the key Not too many people had that one.”

On the rest of his $96 ticket, O’Connor used four horses in the second leg, singled in the third and fourth, used two in the fifth and had 11th-race winner Blushing Blake singled.

The picks: 1. Ryans Ridge. 2. Favoritt. 3. Tam’s Nitemare. 4. Chicks Takin Cash. 5. El Marichi. 6. Mr Superior. 7. Lets Disco First. 8. Judys Special Chick.

Four! King Rhythm Jack, Streakin Sky High and El Marichi in the fifth, Mr Superior in the sixth, Racin For Chicks, Snowy Substance and Lets Disco First in the seventh and Ddf Mea de Bully, Invisible Queen and Judys Special Chick in the eighth.

Shots in the dark: In the first, Ganster gets jockey Hector Cuevas for his first start since Sept. 22 for trainer Jose Antonio Flores. Mi Rio makes his Los Alamitos debut for trainer Jamey Thomas in the third.
