Hello...

Though there was a mandate to bring new blood into this year’s Emmy competition, the freshman class of series still had trouble making a dent. HBO’s profane, gritty western, “Deadwood,” led the newbie pack with 11 nominations, though not for outstanding drama series. CBS’ “Joan of Arcadia” did that, and also garnered a nomination for its young star, Amber Tamblyn.

Of the nominees for outstanding comedy series, the only newcomer was Fox’s “Arrested Development,” a ratings bust that nevertheless has been renewed for a second season.

Goodbye...

“Friends,” “Frasier” and “Sex and the City” are gone, but TV academy members haven’t forgotten them.

HBO’s “Sex and the City” received 11 nominations for its final season, including for outstanding comedy series, lead actress and supporting actress. And while the long-running hits “Frasier” and “Friends” failed to bow out with nominations as best comedy, the NBC shows combined for 16 other nods, including another for three-time winner Kelsey Grammer.
