White Sox right fielder Magglio Ordonez was sent back to Chicago for tests on his left knee, still sore nearly two months after he had surgery.

Ordonez told Manager Ozzie Guillen his knee was hurting and he was removed from the starting lineup before Thursday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians.

“I hope it’s nothing real bad, but we have to be prepared for the worst,” Guillen said.

Ordonez, a four-time All-Star, had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee June 5. He missed 36 games -- the White Sox went 17-19 without him -- before returning on July 8.

Team trainer Herm Schneider said he couldn’t pinpoint what was causing the soreness in Ordonez’s knee.

Ordonez, batting .292 with nine homers and 37 RBIs, told Guillen that his knee didn’t recover after playing right field Wednesday.

“He said he was in a lot of pain,” Guillen said. “I’m the type of guy, if you’re hurting, you’re hurting.”

Boston slugger David Ortiz and Chicago Cub pitcher Carlos Zambrano were suspended for five games for their recent actions in separate games.

Cub pitcher LaTroy Hawkins got a three-game suspension for another incident.

All three players plan to appeal the penalties, which were set to start today. They will be able to play until hearings are held.

Ortiz became upset and threw bats onto the field after being called out on strikes by umpire Matt Hollowell last Friday night at Anaheim.

Zambrano was penalized for intentionally hitting St. Louis’ Jim Edmonds with a pitch Monday night at Wrigley Field.

On Tuesday, Hawkins gave up a tiebreaking homer in the ninth to the Cardinals’ Albert Pujols. Hawkins was ejected after he started yelling at plate umpire Tim Tschida, and the reliever had to be restrained by Manager Dusty Baker and several Cub coaches from going at Tschida.
