From Times Wire Reports

A Special Olympics coach who faces charges that he sexually assaulted a female athlete with the mental capacity of a 10-year-old was investigated but never charged in a similar case involving an autistic man three years ago, a newspaper reported.

Suisun City Police Lt. Anthony Welch told the Fairfield Daily Republic that the coach, Robert Jacobsen, submitted to an interrogation about sodomy allegations involving the male athlete in 2001.

However, prosecutors didn’t move forward because they feared the victim would not hold up under cross-examination.

Jacobsen, 58, was arrested last month on two counts of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old swimmer and track athlete with the Solano County Special Olympics at a rented storage locker in Fairfield.

Jacobsen pleaded not guilty and was released in lieu of $35,000 bail.
