Paul Marigney had 40 points and 10 rebounds to lead Saint Mary’s over Pepperdine, 104-95, on Sunday.

Saint Mary’s (18-11, 9-5 West Coast Conference) never trailed in topping 100 points for the first time since 1991. The Gaels tied a school record with 15 three-point baskets.

Marigney, a junior guard, tied a school record for most points in a conference game, which Odell Johnson had set in 1956 against Pepperdine.

The Gaels shot 67% in the first half and led 55-40 at halftime. The Waves tried to press in the second half, but the tactic led to fouls.

St. Mary’s, which shot no free throws in the first half, attempted 41 in the second half, making 31. The Gaels made eight consecutive free throws in the final minute.

Pepperdine (14-15, 9-5) had five players score in double figures, led by Alex Acker with 19 points

The Waves have a first-round bye in the West Coast Conference tournament at Santa Clara and will play Portland or Loyola Marymount Friday. The Gaels don’t play until Saturday’s semifinals.
