Investigation of Car’s Plunge Into Ravine

Share

Re “After Crash Ordeal, How Good a Search?” April 27: I read your article about the inability of rescue officials to find Norma Bustamante’s car after it left Highway 60 and fell into a ravine. There is one person who seems more culpable in this tragedy than anyone mentioned, and that is the person who called 911 to report the accident.

Had the caller pulled over and waited for rescue personnel to arrive, they could have been pointed in the direction of where the car left the road. Making the phone call was the right thing to do, but leaving the scene was a big mistake.

I am saddened by the loss suffered by the Bustamante family. However, in their grief I think they are overlooking a very important fact. Bustamante, according to written reports, did not protect herself or her little daughter by using seat belts. Perhaps if the mother had followed the law, she would have survived and could have called out for help. I think it is unfair to place all the blame on those involved in the rescue response.
