Los Angeles City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski informed her colleagues Monday that she is taking herself out of the running to replace Ron Deaton, the council’s chief legislative analyst.

She said that, after much reflection, she had decided that it was best for the council if she removed herself from consideration and instead participate in searching for a successor to Deaton, who is leaving to head the Department of Water and Power.

Miscikowski has spent almost her entire career in Los Angeles city government, working as a staff member to former Councilman Marvin Braude for a quarter of a century before taking over his job.

She will be forced out of office next year by term limits, and has long been mentioned as a candidate to succeed Deaton.

Officially, the legislative analyst’s job is to advise the council on policy matters. But under Deaton, the office wielded great power, leading some to call Deaton the 16th council member and others to compare him to God.

Council members have said that deciding who will replace him, and what that person’s role should be, will have long-term implications for the future direction of the council and the city. The council is set to discuss those topics at its meeting today.

“This is a decision that could have ramifications in the city for the next decade,” Councilman Jack Weiss said. “This shouldn’t be a closed process, and it shouldn’t be a slam-dunk for any candidates.”

Miscikowski said that it is imperative that the legislative analyst remain strong and independent, and that she looks forward to helping choose the right person for the post.
