Agata Could Make Amends

Share

Trainer Julio Canani had a memorable meet at Del Mar, sweeping the track’s three-race series for 3-year-old turf runners with Blackdoun and winning Grade I races with Amorama, Special Ring and Sweet Catomine.

One race escaped him, though, when Agata, a 3-year-old French-bred filly, finished fourth in her U.S. debut on Sept. 1.

Agata will try to make amends today as she drops to face maidens in the fourth at Santa Anita.

Owned by Gary Tanaka, the daughter of Poliglote is the 6-5 favorite in the $41,000 race at a mile on the grass.

Corey Nakatani, who won two races on opening day, takes over on Agata, replacing David Flores.

Glassy, a 3-year-old Stravinsky filly, is the one to beat.

Owned by breeder John Zolezzi, she has been the runner-up in two consecutive turf races, losing to promising fillies Miss Chapin and Mea Domina. Victor Espinoza will ride.

Race of the day: Six veteran sprinters who have combined for 54 wins will get together in today’s seventh at Belmont Park.

Spooky Mulder, a 6-year-old Brunswick gelding, tops the cast with 18 victories from 42 starts. He will be ridden by Aaron Gryder in the $100,000 claimer at six furlongs.

Private City (five wins), Papua (nine), Mighty David (nine), Secret Run (eight) and Here’s Zealous (five) complete the field.
