Maryland’s 13-game home winning streak ended in stunning fashion Saturday, as Georgia Tech blanked the No. 23 Terrapins through three quarters in a 20-7 Atlantic Coast Conference victory at College Park, Md.

“Our offense was inept. That was maybe one of the worst offensive performances I’ve ever been associated with,” Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen said. “It’s the worst we played in a long time.”

Reggie Ball threw for 197 yards and a touchdown to help the Yellow Jackets (3-2, 2-2 ACC) stop a two-game losing streak.

“This game was make-or-break for our season,” Yellow Jacket linebacker Chris Reis said. “We needed to come out and get our confidence back up.”

The Terrapins (3-2, 1-1) were undefeated at home since September 2002 and 21-1 at Byrd Stadium since Friedgen took over the program in 2001.

“To play like we did tonight is very disheartening,” Friedgen said. “I told the kids last night that it would be a real test to see where we are. If this is where we are, we’re in trouble.”

Maryland quarterback Joel Statham entered leading the conference in total offense, but Friedgen removed the struggling quarterback in the third quarter with Maryland trailing, 20-0.

“Joel just couldn’t do anything right,” Friedgen said.

North Carolina 30, North Carolina State 24 -- The Tar Heel defense stopped Wolfpack running back T.A. McLendon inches short of the end zone with six seconds left -- after a touchdown by McLendon on the previous play was disallowed -- in a victory at Chapel Hill, N.C.

After one referee signaled McLendon had scored on second down, a quick huddle by the officials left the Wolfpack (3-2, 2-1) a yard short. They had one more chance, but McLendon’s dive was stopped and he fumbled on the play.

Khalif Mitchell recovered for North Carolina (3-3, 2-2), which needed only one play to run out the clock and beat North Carolina State (3-2, 2-1) for the ninth time in 12 games.

Virginia Tech 17, Wake Forest 10 -- Mike Imoh ran for 100 yards and the winning touchdown at Winston-Salem, N.C., as the Hokies won their first road game as a member of the ACC.

Imoh scored with 2:10 left on a seven-yard run to give Virginia Tech (4-2, 2-1) the lead. Wake Forest (3-3, 0-3) then drove to Virginia Tech’s five-yard line but failed to score.
