Two people were killed and at least two were critically injured Monday afternoon when a vehicle swerved across California 126 near Santa Paula and collided head on with a second vehicle, authorities said.

Helicopter and ambulance rescue crews took survivors to hospitals in Ventura.

“It appears one vehicle crossed over from one side to the other and there was a head-on crash,” said California Highway Patrol dispatcher Mary Clark.

No identifying information was released about those involved.

One person was ejected and two had to be extricated from the vehicles, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear whether those three included the two who died.

One of the vehicles burst into flames and the other overturned on the road during the 4:30 p.m. accident about 2 1/2 miles east of Santa Paula, authorities said.

The accident occurred during rush hour, backing up traffic for miles and forcing detours onto South Mountain Road between Santa Paula and Fillmore for hours, authorities said.
