Womack Makes Return

St. Louis second baseman Tony Womack was in the starting lineup Thursday, one day after being forced out of Game 6 after three innings because of lower back spasms.

Manager Tony La Russa moved Womack from his customary leadoff spot to seventh in the batting order, reasoning that the Cardinals could remove Womack before his first at-bat if he did not feel comfortable. Shortstop Edgar Renteria replaced Womack atop the order.

Cardinal reliever Julian Tavarez has appealed the $10,000 fine levied by Major League Baseball for throwing over the head of Houston’s Jeff Bagwell in Game 4.
