Impact: The measure would generate about $8.2 billion over the 30-year period to widen freeways and interchanges, make improvements on heavily traveled surface streets, and fund mass transit projects and services for senior citizens and the disabled.

Opponents argue that such transportation projects should be funded from gasoline taxes, which are collected by the state. But state lawmakers have diverted much of the state’s gasoline taxes in recent years to help close state budget gaps.
