The Carolina Panthers lost any hope that DeShaun Foster would play again this season when it was determined Monday the running back needed surgery for a broken collarbone.

The former UCLA standout was expected to sit out six to 10 weeks after he was injured in the Panthers’ loss to Denver on Oct. 10.

“The way it was healing -- it’s a medical term and it’s not doing a certain thing -- we are going to do the surgery and get it fixed,” Coach John Fox said. “We knew we were going to lose him for a significant period of time, but if we could have held off the roster spot we would have.”

Foster, who sat out his rookie season because of a knee injury before becoming an outstanding backup to Stephen Davis last year, was put on injured reserve.

The Panthers are extremely short at running back. Davis sat out his fourth game this season Sunday because of a knee injury, and No. 3 running back Rod Smart is also out because of a knee problem.

Left tackle Jonathan Ogden probably will sit out the Baltimore Ravens’ game against the unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday because of a pulled left hamstring.

Ogden had to be helped off the field in the fourth quarter of the Ravens’ 20-6 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

The Ravens will wait until Wednesday to formally declare the status of the seven-time Pro Bowl selection for the game against the Eagles.

Tampa Bay fullback Mike Alstott will be sidelined at least a month because of a sprained knee ligament suffered Sunday in the Buccaneers’ 19-7 victory over the Chicago Bears.

The six-time Pro Bowl pick was injured in the third quarter when he was tackled by linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer.

The Tennessee Titans said quarterback Steve McNair is day to day after bruising his sternum for the third time in five weeks in a 20-3 loss at Minnesota.

The latest hit didn’t send him to a hospital as the first one Sept. 26 did, but he spent three quarters on the sideline in enough pain he could take only shallow breaths.

McNair’s status for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals is uncertain.

LaVar Arrington of the Washington Redskins strained his right knee in practice, a setback for the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker, who had hoped to play Sunday after sitting out four games.

Arrington, who had surgery on the knee Sept. 23, slipped on a wet field. The Redskins are coming off an open week.

Seattle Seahawk linebacker Isaiah Kacyvenski suffered an ankle sprain against Arizona and is doubtful for Sunday’s game against Carolina.

The Bears decided not to sign Tim Couch and will stick with their three quarterbacks despite struggles on offense and a 1-5 record.

Couch, the top overall pick in the 1999 draft, had a tryout Friday and Saturday with the Bears, who lost starting quarterback Rex Grossman to a season-ending knee injury in the third week.

Couch was cut this year by Cleveland, where he played his first five seasons, and by Green Bay.
