Top Girls’ Golf Teams Get an Early Test in Irvine

Defending state champion Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula, San Clemente, Palm Desert, Huntington Beach Marina, Cerritos and Poway are among the 19 teams playing in the season-opening Shootout at Strawberry Farms girls’ golf tournament at 1 p.m. today in Irvine.

The tournament, hosted by Irvine University, includes top individuals such as Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach Edison, Jennifer Osborn of Marina, Shannon Yocum of Peninsula and Ryann O’Toole of San Clemente.

Peninsula, San Clemente, Cerritos, Marina, Palm Desert, Santa Margarita and University all finished among the top teams in the Southern Section finals last year.

It is the first time since girls’ golf became a sanctioned sport by the California Interscholastic Federation in 1998 that a tournament of this caliber has been held during the regular season.

“There is nothing else like it in our sport,” University Coach Mike Bova said. “Everyone is looking forward to testing themselves right out of the gates.”

Today is the first day that schools across the Southern Section can compete in tournaments or nonleague games.

Football

Fox Sports Net 2 will continue its weekly broadcast of high school football games tonight when Mission Viejo plays host to Los Alamitos. The game, which begins at 7:30, will be shown at 11 o’clock. The Dodger-Cardinal game will be shown live on FSN2 tonight.

FSN has three other games set, including Los Angeles Loyola at Venice at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17. That game will be shown live on FSN West. On Sept. 23, Newhall Hart will play at Westlake at 7 p.m. live on FSN2. On Oct. 15, Norco takes on host Corona Centennial at 7 p.m. live on FSN2.

Four more games in October and two in November will be scheduled for broadcasting.

Basketball

Rashad Austin, a 6-foot-7 senior who started last season at Santa Ana Mater Dei, has transferred to Etiwanda, one of the favorites to contend for a state Division I championship.

It’s the fourth high school in four years for Austin, who earlier attended Claremont and Alta Loma. Etiwanda lost in the state regional final last season and has three returning starters.

Baseball

Matt Dominguez of Chatsworth has been selected the top first-year varsity baseball player in the nation by the National High School Baseball Coaches Assn. Dominguez, who had 65 runs batted in last season as a freshman, will receive the award at a ceremony later this year.
