No matter what happens, the San Diego Padres continue to hang on to the National League West lead.

The Padres lost shortstop Khalil Greene because of a broken toe and dropped below .500 on Sunday, becoming the first team to lead a division with a losing record this late in a season.

Rookie Robinson Tejeda pitched seven strong innings, Chase Utley and Pat Burrell had two-run singles in a seven-run fifth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the host Padres, 8-3, to complete a three-game sweep.

San Diego remains three games ahead of second-place Arizona. The last team to lead a division with a losing record in August was the Texas Rangers, who topped the American League West at 52-62 on Aug. 11, 1994, the day before a player strike ended the season.

“It doesn’t matter what your record is if you win the division,” Manager Bruce Bochy said. “We’re not trying to win this thing playing sub-.500 ball. It’s going to take over .500 ball to win this division, I firmly believe that. Unless we do that, we won’t win.”

The loss of Greene could have a major effect, especially since he was one of the few Padres who have hit consistently lately. Bochy said Greene is expected to sit out two to three weeks.

San Diego has scored 11 runs while losing four of five.

The Phillies moved within half a game of Houston in the NL wild-card race and finished their West Coast trip with a 5-1 record.

Pittsburgh 8, Houston 0 -- Dave Williams (10-8) pitched his first complete game, and Jack Wilson hit a grand slam for one of the Pirates’ four homers at Houston.

Jason Bay, Jose Castillo and Ryan Doumit also connected for the Pirates, who have shut out Houston four times this season.

Florida 4, San Francisco 1 -- A.J. Burnett (11-6) won his sixth consecutive start, pitching into the eighth inning in 92-degree heat at Miami.

Juan Pierre had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for Florida. He also made a diving catch of pinch-hitter Randy Winn’s short fly ball to center field with two men on to end the game.

Chicago 5, St. Louis 4 -- Mark Prior (8-4) won for the first time in nearly a month, getting help from Kerry Wood out of the bullpen at Chicago.

Pinch-hitter Jose Macias hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the sixth inning against Matt Morris (12-5), shortly after the right-hander was hit in his left hand near the wrist by a line drive.

Atlanta 13, Arizona 8 -- Jeff Francoeur hit a three-run homer and threw out two runners at the plate, and the host Braves scored seven runs in the third inning.

Francoeur drove in a fourth run with a bases-loaded walk, and Chipper Jones also had four runs batted in with a homer and two doubles.

Washington 9, Colorado 2 -- John Patterson (7-3) won his third consecutive start with eight innings of one-run ball at Denver, and the Nationals completed their seventh series sweep.

The Rockies left 10 baserunners on and were swept at Coors Field for the third time this year.

Milwaukee 8, Cincinnati 3 -- Rookie Corey Hart hit his first homer, a three-run shot that capped a five-run eighth inning, and the Brewers ended the Reds’ 10-game road winning streak.

Lyle Overbay hit a go-ahead single in the eighth for Milwaukee, which had lost its last five games. The Reds’ five-game winning streak ended.
