The geisha in pictures

The photo exhibition “Geishas” examines the world of the disappearing culture of Japanese entertainers. There is often a misconception about geishas, however. They are trained at a young age to perform such cultural performances as singing, poetry recitation, flower arranging and tea ceremonies. The exhibition includes vintage photographs that date back to the 1930s and more recent color images, including a series of works by National Geographic photographer Jodi Cobb.

“Geishas,” Apex Fine Art, 152 N. La Brea Ave., L.A. Opens Friday. (323) 634-7887.

* Hours: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Ends Jan. 6.
