Taking the merriness out of happy holidays

Re “Hold the holy in those happy

holidays,” Opinion, Dec. 1

Why does everything have to turn into a battle? Jonah Goldberg, the judges wouldn’t be doing their jobs if, when the people bring cases to court, they just said, “Never mind -- we are supposed to mind our own business.”

This whole idea that by saying “happy holidays” you’re anti-Christmas is bogus. I don’t know what holiday everyone I meet celebrates -- there are actually other holidays of significance celebrated during this season. I want to wish good cheer for whatever holiday people celebrate. I don’t see how that stops Christians from enjoying their holiday. I just wonder if governments wanted to put out symbols of Muslim or Hindu holidays if the Christians would fight to see that done as well.

Can someone explain why conservatives are upset that stores wish people “happy holidays” instead of “merry Christmas”? Do they feel that Christmas is not being sufficiently commercialized? I would think that people of religious faith would welcome the disentanglement of Christmas from moneymaking, not try to expand it. Or perhaps they think its true essence lies in Christmas trees, Christmas decorations and Christmas cards.
