An excess of star power

Fridays at Xes are proving to be one-stop dancing for pop and hip-hop lovers. Last week, the Hollywood scene hosted by promoters John Andreas and Reggie Marshall attracted the likes of Cypress Hill and Hilary Duff, whose star power got the rappers bounced from their booth. Dat’s cold.... In hot news, the rock ‘n’ roll photo exhibition “Like It Was Yesterday” at the Don O’Melveny Gallery space in WeHo has been extended through Saturday. The Jan. 19 opening party was a sort of Who’s Who of the ‘70s. Such scenesters as Rodney Bingenheimer, Leif Garrett, Sex Pistol Steve Jones, the Knack’s Bruce Gary and Runaways singer Cherie Currie were among those who came to pay tribute to photojournalist Brad Elterman, who began taking snaps of his famous friends when he was 14. “The magic was backstage, it was back at the hotel, it was by the pool, it was in the parking lot,” says Elterman, whose knack for capturing intimate moments is reflected in the show.

Get some Brit with your brew

Looking for a bit of U.K. love? Head to the Bigfoot Lodge in Atwater Village on Wednesdays for “London Calling,” a British pub night when the brews are cheap and the tunes are classic Brit punk, goth and glam. And on V-Day at the Bigfoot, it’s “Songs of Love, Songs of Heartbreak,” karaoke style. Kleenex optional.... Such do-gooders as Mezklah, Joey Altruda and Future Pigeons are among the artists scheduled to perform at a tsunami fundraiser at the Echo on Feb. 3. In more Echo news, one of our favorite Hollywood gee-tarists, Soda, from the ‘90s pop-punk band Wax, brings his new 16-piece (!) band, titled Soda and His Million Piece Band, to the Echo Park nightclub Feb. 15. Look for accordions, mandolins, horns and traps.

We hear one of the last great links to old-school rock ‘n’ roll, guitarist Willie Chambers -- of Chambers Brothers fame -- ripped it up at Canter’s Kibitz Room last week.

Drumming his way to $2,500

Royce Shorter Jr.’s a happy camper: The 21-year-old from Seattle beat out 1,000 other contestants to win Guitar Center’s annual drum-off, the finals of which took place at the Wiltern LG on Saturday. Shorter walked away with a 2005 Scion xB and a $2,500 shopping spree from Guitar Center. Not too shabby....

Bumped into Fred Dickson of the Dead Billys at Weber’s Place in Reseda. The Santa Barbara-based guitarist-singer tells me he keeps it all in the family. His group -- composed of wife Heather; sons Bobby, 20, and Nathan, 19; and stepson Ian, 20 -- channels Johnny Cash with a dose of the Damned and the Cramps tossed in.... Gonna get kuh-razy in Malibu on Sunday as Santa Cruz’s masked hip-hop producer-DJ KutMasta Kurt and rapper Kool Keith get down with the funk at the Malibu Inn. Watch yo’self!
