Update -- Chivas USA’s refuerzos, or replacements, from Mexico have arrived, but they cannot yet play for the Major League Soccer expansion club. Forward Juan Pablo Garcia, who stunned Mexican clubs three weeks ago by acting as a free agent and signing with Chivas, has had his work pass held up by the Mexican Soccer Federation, possibly as retribution for his bold act, and probably won’t play in MLS until the international transfer window opens Aug. 15. He could, however, play in Chivas’ exhibition against the PDL’s Southern California Seahorses on Saturday night at La Mirada High. Garcia had been with the Mexican national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup until El Tri’s upset loss to Colombia in the quarterfinals. Defender Hector Castro and goalkeeper Sergio Garcia have been training with Chivas this week but have yet to sign. Midfielder Francisco Palencia, meanwhile, is reportedly having second thoughts, again, about joining MLS. Chivas regains the services of defender Douglas Sequeira, who had been with Costa Rica for the Gold Cup. The Revolution, which leads MLS with a goal differential of plus-15 (Chivas is last at minus-22), broke Chivas’ heart April 30 at Foxboro, Mass., when Clint Dempsey’s 88th-minute goal gave New England a 1-0 victory. Revolution forward Taylor Twellman is the league’s leading scorer, with nine goals and four assists in 13 games, and goalkeeper Matt Reis’ 1.00 goals-against average is the best in MLS. Chivas’ leading scorer is midfielder Hector Cuadros, with four goals and four assists.
