Clippers Lose Shot at Wells

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Clippers’ pursuit of Bonzi Wells ended Friday when the Memphis Grizzlies agreed in principle to send the veteran guard to the Sacramento Kings as part of a three-team trade involving the Utah Jazz, Wells’ agent said.

William Phillips, who said Thursday that the Clippers were interested in signing or trading for Wells, confirmed reports that the Kings will send guard Bobby Jackson to the Grizzlies and center Greg Ostertag to the Jazz. The Jazz will send forward Curtis Borchardt and guards Raul Lopez and Kirk Snyder to the Grizzlies.

The deal won’t be officially announced until the NBA moratorium is lifted. The NBA announced Friday that the moratorium would end Thursday, at which time free agents such as Cuttino Mobley, who last week agreed to a $42-million deal to join the Clippers, would be able to sign their new contracts.

The Clippers’ inability to land Wells, who is expected to replace Mobley in the Kings’ starting lineup, might make them more inclined to put together a sign-and-trade deal for guard Marko Jaric, or possibly to retain him.

Jaric, a restricted free agent, seems ready to move on and is scheduled to make trips next week to visit the Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets. But the Clippers have the right to match any offer made to him by another team.

Two years ago, the Clippers retained Corey Maggette and Elton Brand by matching offers made by the Jazz and Miami Heat, respectively.
