From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A West Covina police officer on Friday night shot and killed a man who falsely told police his van in a Covina parking lot was rigged with explosives, authorities said Saturday.

Covina police received a report shortly after 6 p.m. that a man was yelling obscenities at passing women from a van in the Rite Aid parking lot at 139 Grand Ave.

When officers arrived, the man refused to get out of the van and told police he had dynamite inside, said Deputy Bill Spear of the county Sheriff’s Department.

When the man drove toward the officers, a West Covina officer fired a rifle at the driver, hitting him in the upper torso, Spear said. The man, who was not identified by police Saturday, died at the scene.

No explosives were found in the van.
