Giants Get Winn From Mariners

The Seattle Mariners traded outfielder Randy Winn to the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night for backup catcher Yorvit Torrealba and minor league pitcher Jesse Foppert.

Winn is batting .275 with six home runs, 37 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. A career .283 hitter, he was an All-Star in 2002 when he hit a career-high .298 with 14 home runs, 75 RBIs and 27 stolen bases for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Giant Manager Felipe Alou said Winn would report to the Giants on Monday and be the team’s starting center fielder when the Giants play the Colorado Rockies in San Francisco on Tuesday.

“I saw him play a lot when he was with Tampa Bay and I was impressed,” Alou said. “I think he will be a very good addition to our team.”

Winn said he did not expect to be traded -- even though the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins also talked to the Mariners about him.

“I try not to pay attention to rumors,” he said in a conference call. “I didn’t know the Giants were interested, but I’m definitely happy about it.”

Alou said Torrealba was not getting to play much as the backup to starting catcher Mike Matheny, who has a three-year contract.

Torrealba, who has spent five years with the Giants, played in 34 games this season, starting 24. He was batting .226 with one home run and seven RBIs.

In a separate deal, the Mariners traded catcher Miguel Olivo to the San Diego Padres for catcher Miguel Ojeda and right-hander Nate Mateo.

The Colorado Rockies put five-time All-Star first baseman Todd Helton, who has a strained left calf, on the 15-day disabled list.

Helton, who last played July 25, was batting .294 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs. He had never been on the disabled list in his nine years in the major leagues.

Friday’s trade that sent Phil Nevin from San Diego to Texas for pitcher Chan Ho Park was approved by the commissioner’s office and finalized. The Padres also got $6 million from Texas.

Nevin didn’t play for the Rangers on Saturday in Toronto against the Blue Jays. Manager Buck Showalter said he would be the designated hitter today.

The Atlanta Braves put Jay Powell on the 15-day disabled list a day after the reliever broke his right arm throwing a pitch in the ninth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Team trainer Jeff Porter said it was too early to declare Powell’s career over after the right-hander broke his humerus -- the bone in the upper arm.

Gabe Kapler, a backup outfielder with the Boston Red Sox last season, rejoined them after the outfielder completed a rehabilitation assignment at triple-A Pawtucket.

Outfielder Adam Hyzdu was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Kapler, who signed with Boston after playing sparingly in Japan this season.

Kapler had been on the 15-day disabled list because of a lower back strain.

Colorado designated utility infielder Desi Relaford for assignment and purchased the contract of infielder Omar Quintanilla from triple-A Colorado Springs.
