San Diego Padre first baseman Phil Nevin was put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday because of a strained muscle in his left side.

The move was made retroactive to Tuesday. Outfielder Ben Johnson was recalled from triple-A Portland to take Nevin’s roster spot.

Nevin hurt himself during batting practice Tuesday night and hasn’t played since. He thinks he’ll be ready to go when he’s eligible to be activated on July 7.

The Mets purchased the contract of veteran infielder Jose Offerman from triple-A Norfolk.
