Planned roads imperil parks
The nonprofit California State Parks Foundation sees trouble ahead -- and it’s on wheels.
In its annual “state of state parks” report, the foundation ranks proliferating roads and plans for high-speed rail as chief threats to the 1.5-million-acre California park system.
The report cites a proposed toll road through San Onofre State Beach.
The foundation also warns that a proposed rail line between Northern and Southern California would encroach on 22 state parks.
Though a 200-mph “bullet train” might cut traffic and smog, the report says it would cause noise and fragment habitat.
The California High-Speed Rail Authority, created nine years ago, is studying routes for the 700-mile project.
