Wiggins Leads Stanford

Stanford’s Candice Wiggins, in her NCAA tournament debut, scored 16 of her 29 points in the second half to carry the second-seeded Cardinal to its 21st straight victory, 94-57, over Santa Clara in the first round of the Kansas City Regional on Saturday night at Fresno.

Stanford (30-2) started the second half with a 31-3 run, doubling its 10-point halftime lead in the opening two minutes.

The Broncos (17-14) stayed in the game with their perimeter play, shooting seven for 12 from three-point range in the first half.

Michigan State 73, Alcorn State 41 -- The top-seeded Spartans (29-3) struggled with turnovers and tepid shooting early at Minneapolis, then got going in the second half behind Liz Shimek, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Alcorn State (21-9) shot 23.4% from the field.

Utah 73, Iowa State 61 -- Kim Smith had 22 points and eight rebounds for the 10th-seeded Utes (26-7), who rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit at Fresno.

Anne O’Neil scored 14 for the seventh-seeded Cyclones (23-7).

Kansas State 70, Bowling Green 60 -- Kendra Wecker scored 18 of her 25 points in the second half to lead the fourth-seeded Wildcats (24-7) at Seattle.

Liz Honegger led the 13th-seeded Falcons (23-8) with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Vanderbilt 67, Montana 44 -- Abi Ramsey scored all 13 of her points in the first half, and Ashley Earley scored 15 of her 21 in the second half for the fifth-seeded Commodores (23-7) at Seattle. Lynsey Monaco led the 12th-seeded Grizzlies (22-8) with 10 points.

Baylor 91, Illinois State 70 -- Sophia Young scored 21 points and Steffanie Blackmon had 13 for the second-seeded Bears at Seattle.

The Redbirds (13-18) made nine of 29 attempts in the first half as Baylor (28-3) built a 20-point halftime lead.

Virginia 79, Old Dominion 57 -- Brandi Teamer scored 17 of her 23 points in the second half at Minneapolis for the sixth-seeded Cavaliers (21-10), who returned to the NCAA tournament after a one-year absence.

Shareese Grant scored 16 points for the 11th-seeded Monarchs (22-9).

Oregon 58, Texas Christian 55 -- Cathrine Kraayeveld scored 23 points and Brandi Davis made two crucial three-pointers to help the 10th-seeded Ducks (21-9) to the upset over the seventh-seeded Horned Frogs (23-10) at Seattle.

Arizona State 87, Eastern Kentucky 65 -- Emily Westerberg scored 14 of her 20 points in the first half at Fresno and the Sun Devils advanced past the first round for the second time in four years.

Kristen Kovesdy had 18 points for fifth-seeded Arizona State (23-9), and Miranda Eckerle had 22 points and five rebounds for the Colonels (23-8).

Minnesota 64, St. Francis (Pa.) 33 -- Jamie Broback had 17 points for the Gophers (25-7), backed by a crowd of 11,312 at Minneapolis.

Christin Black scored 13 points for the Red Flash (21-10).

CHATTANOOGA REGIONAL

Texas 64, Oral Roberts 47 -- Playing with a broken pinkie, Nina Norman scored 20 points on seven-of-11 shooting with five assists for the third-seeded Longhorns (22-8) at Dallas.

The 14th-seeded Golden Eagles (22-9) were in the NCAA tournament for only the third time, all without a win.

Georgia 75, Rice 49 -- Cori Chambers scored 19 points for the sixth-seeded Bulldogs (23-9) at Dallas.

The Owls (24-9), who had won 12 straight games, made their second NCAA tournament appearance. Georgia has missed two of the 24 tournaments.

PHILADELPHIA REGIONAL

Middle Tennessee 60, North Carolina State 58 -- Patrice Holmes made the winning shot with 1.6 seconds left for the 12th-seeded Blue Raiders (24-8) at Dallas.

Tiffany Stansbury led the fifth-seeded Wolfpack (21-8) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Texas Tech 69, Texas-Arlington 49 -- LaToya Davis had a career-high 26 points and 14 rebounds at Dallas to lead the fourth-seeded Red Raiders (23-7) to their 14th straight first-round victory.

Rola Ogunoye had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Mavericks (21-10).
