El Camino Real Breezes Past Chatsworth

Casey Greene’s three-run triple highlighted a six-run fifth inning and Sammy Donabedian’s three-run home run keyed a five-run sixth to help Woodland Hills El Camino Real defeat Chatsworth, 11-5, Wednesday.

With its second victory over the defending City Section champions, the Conquistadores finished second in the West Valley League.

Chatsworth, 26-3 overall and 13-2 in league, already clinched the league title and is expected to be seeded No. 1 when the City playoff pairings are announced Saturday.

Shaun Kort pitched a complete game for El Camino Real (24-6, 12-3), ranked No. 6 in the Southland by The Times, and also contributed an RBI double.

Matt Dominguez had a three-run home run for No. 2 Chatsworth during a five-run fifth inning that cut the deficit to 6-5.

Softball

Jenna Schachtner struck out 43, the fourth-best total in Southern Section history, in a 26-inning, 2-1 Prep League victory over Pasadena Westridge.

The game, which began Monday but was suspended after 13 innings, featured the second 40-strikeout performance this week; Kirsten Slouber of Montclair Prep struck out 47 in a game completed Monday.

The section record is 56, held by De De Weiman of Cerritos Gahr, followed by her opponent in that 1986 game, Lakewood St. Joseph’s Lisa Fernandez, who had 48.

Schachtner (10-4) gave up only four hits but walked eight. Westridge’s run, which came in the top of the seventh, was unearned. Selena Mone pitched the first 22 innings for Westridge and had 10 strikeouts.

Track and Field

Greg Wells, who guided Los Angeles Loyola to three Southern Section titles in 15 years as coach and helped direct the Cubs to 115 consecutive dual-meet victories, died Tuesday of cancer. He was 54. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
