Southern Mississippi Wins in Overtime, 27-24

Darren McCaleb kicked a 34-yard field goal in overtime Tuesday night to lift Southern Mississippi to a 27-24 victory over Marshall at Huntington, W.Va. Marshall, 4-5 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA, failed to score in overtime when freshman David DeFatta’s 27-yard field goal attempt bounced off the left upright. McCaleb then kicked the winner for the Golden Eagles (5-3, 4-1).

Associated Press reported that more than half of the 30 schools making football coaching changes last year will receive grades of “C, D or F” when this year’s minority hiring report card is released today by the Black Coaches Assn....Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley, who sat out the loss to Florida because of an injury to his left knee, is expected to play Saturday against Auburn....The University of Colorado’s fund-raising foundation paid out more than $700,000 in questionable expenses, prompting school officials to promise changes. In a report released to lawmakers, auditors criticized CU Foundation expenditures of $606,600 for food and catering, $94,000 for flowers and gifts, about $15,200 for alcohol and $1,600 for limousine services.

Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks, who has been under fire, will return next season, Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart said....Buffalo fired Coach Jim Hofher, effective at the end of the season. Hofher, who had one year remaining on his contract, has a 7-48 record in five seasons....Six Tennessee Chattanooga players were charged with raping a female student, a university spokesman said.
