Arizona State was placed on two years’ NCAA probation and cited for lack of institutional control for violations that included extra benefits to Loren Wade, the former running back now facing trial for murder.

Wade, charged in the March shooting death of former Sun Devil player Brandon Falkner, was suspended for part of the 2004 season after an assistant in the athletic department compliance office allowed him to charge $900 in car repairs on her personal credit card and arranged for Wade to receive $890 in financial aid for summer school classes he did not attend, among other violations.

The citation for lack of institutional control was related to the university’s discovery during the Wade investigation of 61 cases of athletes receiving reportedly unintentional improper financial aid ranging from $4 to $833.

The NCAA did not impose a postseason or scholarship ban on Arizona State, but the school is subject to “repeat violator” penalties for five years.
