On one of the busiest travel days of the year, the San Bernardino Freeway near Rosemead was closed for more than 90 minutes Wednesday night, backing up traffic for miles, after a bus passenger jumped out a window and claimed that he had a bomb.

The California Highway Patrol closed all lanes on both sides of Interstate 10 just west of the 605 Freeway at 6:50 p.m. after being alerted by Foothill Transit about the passenger’s claim.

The man ran away and has not been apprehended.

A CHP spokesman said the backup stretched as far as 10 miles. Many drivers milled around outside their cars during the wait, while other motorists tried to leave the freeway for alternate routes.

A bomb-sniffing dog and its handler were sent from Ontario International Airport -- where they had been on patrol during the Thanksgiving rush -- to search the bus. No bomb was found, authorities said, and the freeway reopened at 8:28 p.m.
