LaMarcus Hicks returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown and Iowa State capitalized on turnovers for all its points to stun No. 8 Iowa, 23-3, Saturday in Ames.

Iowa State recovered three fumbles, intercepted two passes and had three sacks. Iowa never got closer to the end zone than the Iowa State 26.

The Hawkeyes got 140 yards in 18 carries from Albert Young but had little else going. Their lone score was a 44-yard field goal by Kyle Schlicher in the third quarter.

Even worse for the Hawkeyes, they lost quarterback Drew Tate with an apparent concussion midway through the second quarter.

He was expected to return for next Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa, Coach Kirk Ferentz said.

Tate, the preseason offensive player of the year in the Big Ten Conference, was injured tackling Steve Paris after throwing an interception with Iowa trailing, 9-0.

He was examined on the sideline, then walked to the locker room and watched the second half in sweat clothes.

No. 13 Purdue 49, Akron 24 -- Jerod Void ran for 101 yards and a touchdown, and Dustin Keller caught two touchdown passes at West Lafayette, Ind.

Brandon Kirsch ran the offense effectively, completing 22 of 34 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns for the Boilermakers, who had 267 yards passing and rushed for 211. Dorien Bryant caught nine passes for 70 yards.

The Zips haven’t beaten a Big Ten opponent in more than a century and are 1-14 all-time against the conference. They beat Ohio State in 1894.

Michigan State 42, Hawaii 14 -- Drew Stanton completed 21 of 26 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns at home for the Spartans, who had 499 yards against the Warriors, making their first trip to the Eastern time zone since 1975.

Michigan State scored 35 consecutive points before Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan connected with Davone Bess on a three-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.

Northwestern 38, Northern Illinois 37 -- Tyrell Sutton ran for his fourth touchdown of the game with just over a minute left, and Northern Illinois failed to convert a two-point conversion in the final seconds at Evanston, Ill.

After Sutton put Northwestern up, 38-31, with a five-yard touchdown run, Northern Illinois marched down the field in less than minute to set up Phil Horvath’s 19-yard scoring pass to Sam Hurd with six seconds left.

Instead of trying to send the game in overtime by kicking the extra point, Coach Joe Novak decided to go for the win. But Horvath’s pass to Hurd, who was closely guarded by Cole, was incomplete.

Penn State 42, Cincinnati 24 -- Michael Robinson’s 59-yard touchdown pass to Justin King sparked a quiet home crowd and Penn State showed off a big-play offense after halftime to support a solid defense. It was Coach Joe Paterno’s 345th victory.

Wisconsin 65, Temple 0 -- Senior tight end Owen Daniels caught a career-high three touchdown passes at home.

It was the Badgers’ biggest margin of victory since an 85-0 shutout of Marquette in 1915 and their highest-scoring day since getting 69 points against New Mexico State in 1962.

The Owls gained seven yards and had two first downs in the game’s first 56 minutes.

Illinois 40, San Jose State 19 -- Tim Brasic, Pierre Thomas and E.B. Halsey scored first-quarter touchdowns and Illinois erased an early deficit in Champaign, Ill.

Thomas’ touchdown was set up by a 27-yard interception return by Remond Willis.

Illinois held the Spartans to 15 yards rushing and 231 total yards on the way to a 2-0 record for the first time since its Big Ten championship season in 2001.

Indiana 35, Nicholls State 31 -- Blake Powers threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to James Hardy with 47 seconds left at Bloomington, Ind. Powers passed for 307 yards and four touchdowns for Indiana, which was in control early before the Colonels got back into the game in the third quarter. A 40-yard touchdown run by Anthony Harris gave Nicholls State its first lead, 31-28, late in the third quarter.

Minnesota 56, Colorado State 24 -- Laurence Maroney ran 26 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns at home for Minnesota.

Maroney gave the Gophers room to breathe by scoring on runs of two and 32 yards in the second quarter. The latter came on a toss sweep in which the junior ran across the line of scrimmage untouched and broke a tackle attempt by free safety Robert Herbert at the five-yard line on his way to the end zone.
