Southern Methodist Scores Upset of No. 22 Texas Christian

DeMyron Martin ran for two touchdowns and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass, leading Southern Methodist to a 21-10 upset of No. 22 Texas Christian on Saturday night at Dallas for the Mustangs’ most important victory since coming off the death penalty in 1989.

SMU (1-1) hadn’t defeated a ranked opponent since Oct. 11, 1986.

When the game ended, hundreds of students -- some of them born after that last victory over a ranked team -- jumped down a roughly seven-foot wall and streamed onto the field to celebrate.

TCU (1-1) was coming off a 17-10 upset of Oklahoma a week earlier that vaulted the Horned Frogs into the top 25.

Clifton Smith had punt returns of 92 and 84 yards for touchdowns and Wendell Mathis rushed for three scores to lead No. 24 Fresno State (1-0) to a 55-17 victory over visiting Weber State (1-1).... Sergio Aguayo kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired to lead Nevada Las Vegas (1-1) to a 34-31 victory over visiting Idaho (0-2).

Ontario Sneed’s 60-yard touchdown run with 1:44 left lifted Central Michigan (1-1, 1-0) to a 38-37 win over Miami of Ohio (0-2, 0-1), ending the RedHawks’ 10-game home-winning streak at Oxford, Ohio, in a Mid-American Conference game. Central Michigan quarterback Kent Smith passed for 356 yards and rushed for 122 yards.... Bruce Gradkowski threw three touchdown passes in the first half and Toledo (2-0, 1-0) raced to a 35-0 lead en route to a 56-23 victory over Western Michigan (0-2, 0-1) in a MAC game at Toledo, Ohio.... Quarterback Omar Jacobs completed 27 of 43 passes for 426 yards and five touchdowns to lead Bowling Green (1-1, 1-0) to a 40-31 win over Ball State (0-2, 0-1) in a MAC game at Muncie, Ind....
