The Red Raiders were coming off an 80-21 win over Sam Houston State, another I-AA school.

Henderson, the NCAA’s active leader in touchdowns, scored on carries of three, six and 44 yards to give Texas Tech a 21-0 lead. His first scoring run made him the Red Raider career leader in touchdowns and points. He has 55 touchdowns for 330 points.

Texas Tech’s Cody Hodges completed 25 of 32 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns.

Hodges, who entered as the nation’s leader with an average of 445 passing yards a game, threw his first interception in the opening quarter. But when the Sycamores’ Rocky Alo returned it, he was hit by Hodges and fumbled. Texas Tech recovered.

Clayton was benched for the game by Coach Bill Snyder. He was charged with aggravated battery after driving away from and allegedly grazing a campus parking services employee.

The Mean Green dropped to 1-2.
