Blalock Rescues Rangers, Cordero

Hank Blalock bailed out teammate Francisco Cordero after another blown save.

Blalock’s run-scoring single with two out in the bottom of the ninth gave the Rangers a 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night at Arlington, Texas.

Blalock, who also had a two-run homer, made a winner of Cordero (3-2), who let Oakland tie it with two runs in the top of the ninth. It was Cordero’s fourth blown save in seven chances this season.

Boston 8, Cleveland 6 -- Manny Ramirez followed a single by Kevin Youkilis and an intentional walk to David Ortiz with a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Red Sox at Cleveland.

Jonathan Papelbon earned his ninth save in as many chances to tie a major league record for saves by a rookie in April, set by Kansas City’s Mike MacDougal in 2003.

Curt Schilling failed in his bid to win his first five starts for the first time in his 19-year career.

Chicago 13, Seattle 3 -- Jermaine Dye hit two home runs, and Tadahito Iguchi homered and had a career-high four RBIs to lead the White Sox at Seattle. Paul Konerko and Joe Crede also homered.

New York 9, Tampa Bay 1 -- Derek Jeter homered and drove in three runs, and Mike Mussina (3-1) yielded only a solo home run in six-plus innings for the Yankees at New York.

Toronto 7, Baltimore 3 -- Vernon Wells doubled home the go-ahead run in a four-run seventh inning at Toronto, helping Gustavo Chacin win for the fourth time in as many starts.

Minnesota 2, Kansas City 1 -- Ruben Sierra and Joe Mauer drove in runs in the eighth inning as the visiting Twins ended a four-game losing streak.
