Carl Crawford delivered a tiebreaking double against Mariano Rivera in the 10th inning, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays defeated the New York Yankees, 4-2, Wednesday night at New York.

Tampa Bay won despite setting a team record by walking 14 batters.

Gary Sheffield hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, who wasted a strong start by Chien-Ming Wang and fell to 1-9 when scoring fewer than six runs. They stranded 16 runners, the last three when Shawn Camp retired Sheffield on a bases-loaded grounder for his second save.

Jason Giambi drew four of New York’s walks, but none of those batters came around to score. The Yankees got their leadoff man on nine times in 10 innings, with seven walks and two hits.

It was the first time in 13 years that a team won when it walked at least 14 in 10 innings or less, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Philadelphia walked 14 and beat San Francisco, 9-8, in 10 innings on April 26, 1993.

The Devil Rays ended a four-game skid and improved to 2-6 on their nine-game trip.

Seattle 5, Chicago 1 -- Jarrod Washburn pitched into the seventh inning, Jose Lopez hit a two-run double and the last-place Mariners took two of three from the first-place White Sox at Seattle. Chicago entered the series with an eight-game winning streak.

Cleveland 7, Boston 1 -- Cliff Lee (2-1) gave up one run and four hits in six innings, helping the host Indians end a three-game losing streak and win for only the fifth time in 14 games.

Toronto 8, Baltimore 2 -- Vernon Wells homered twice, Alex Rios had three hits and the Blue Jays won at Toronto. Toronto has won four of five, and Baltimore has lost four in a row.

Kansas City 3, Minnesota 1 -- Runelvys Hernandez, banished to the minors at the start of the season for being overweight, gave up two hits and one run in seven innings in his first start of the season for the Royals at Kansas City, Mo.

Oakland 6, Texas 4 -- Jay Payton hit a two-run single in the 10th inning that lifted the Athletics to victory at Arlington, Texas. Kevin Mench hit a grand slam to set a Ranger record by homering in his sixth consecutive game.
