New York 8, at Boston 5: Jason Giambi homered twice and drove in five runs, hitting a solo shot to lead off the 10th inning to help the Yankees beat the Red Sox for the fourth straight time this weekend and extend their lead in the AL East to a season-high 5 1/2 games. Jorge Posada also homered in the 10th for the Yankees, who tied the score, 5-5, in the ninth when Derek Jeter flared a single to right to score Melky Cabrera. A victory today would give New York a five-game sweep and a repeat of the 1978 “Boston Massacre,” a four-game September sweep by a combined score of 42-9 that erased the last of Boston’s 14-game lead in the division.

Texas 7, at Detroit 6: Hank Blalock hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth inning, Gary Matthews threw out Magglio Ordonez at the plate to keep the lead in the next inning and the Rangers held on after overcoming a six-run deficit to beat the Tigers.

Oakland 6, at Kansas City 4: Nick Swisher hit a two-run home run and Kirk Saarloos (6-6) survived six shaky innings for his third straight victory. The AL-West leading Athletics got a split of the four-game series after losing both ends of a doubleheader Friday.

Toronto 9, at Baltimore 2: Roy Halladay retired the first 16 batters in earning his 16th win, tops in the majors, and the Blue Jays hit three homers. Halladay (16-3) gave up two runs, four hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out two. He was was perfect until rookie Brandon Fahey grounded a single up the middle with one out in the sixth.

Cleveland 9, at Tampa Bay 4: Jhonny Peralta hit the first grand slam of his career during a five-run sixth and Travis Hafner homered in his third straight game to help lift the Indians. Cleveland loaded the bases with none out in the sixth when reliever Brian Meadows intentionally walked Hafner with runners on first and third. Ryan Garko had a run-scoring single before Peralta’s grand slam made it 9-2.
