From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Epiphanny Prince of Murry Bergtraum High in New York scored 113 points in a game Wednesday, breaking a national prep record previously held by Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller.

Prince, a 5-foot-9 guard, led her team to a 137-32 victory over Brandeis High.

Prince had 58 points at halftime.

“At the half, we thought she had a chance to break the record so we just let her go,” Coach Ed Grezinsky said.

Miller scored 105 points for Riverside Poly against Riverside Norte Vista in 1982. She went on to become an All-American at USC.

Astros File Insurance

Claim on Bagwell

The Houston Astros filed an insurance claim on Jeff Bagwell’s contract, arguing that the four-time All-Star is too injured to play.

Bagwell is guaranteed $17 million next season, but by filing the claim the Astros can recoup $15.6 million if Bagwell retires or is deemed too disabled to play.

General Manager Tim Purpura confirmed Wednesday night that the Astros filed the claim last week.

Colorado Rocky pitcher Ryan Speier, 26, had surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder and could be sidelined for the 2006 season.

WNBA Plans Draft

Around Final Four

The WNBA will hold its pre-draft camp April 3 in Boston between the Final Four and championship game of the women’s NCAA Division I Tournament.

In addition, the league will also hold its 2006 draft in the city’s convention center on April 5, the day after the title game. In past years, the draft would take place at the NBA-TV studios in New Jersey about two weeks after the championship.

WNBA President Donna Orender said on Wednesday that up to 40 players would be invited to the one-day draft camp, to be held at nearby Emmanuel College. Coaches and general managers will get one final look at the talent during morning, afternoon and evening workout sessions.

Orender said the league “would evaluate” how the camp and draft come off in Boston before deciding if the WNBA would do it this way annually.

Changes Are in Store

for Summer X Games

With the Winter X Games having concluded Tuesday in Aspen, Colo., the ESPN staff has turned its attention to the summer version of the action sports festival, to be held Aug. 3-7 at Staples Center in Los Angeles and the Home Depot Center in Carson.

But there will be significant changes, brought about in part by the construction of a hotel mega-complex on what were formerly lots 2-3 at Staples Center -- site of the skateboarding big-air and BMX park competitions.

Chris Stiepock, X Games general manager, said the most notable change is that competition will no longer take place at both venues simultaneously. Instead, it will be held two days at Staples Center and two days at Home Depot Center.

“We learned that at times we polarized the fan base, making people choose between Staples and Home Depot Center,” Stiepock said.

Staples Center will again be the site of the skateboard and BMX vert-ramp events, and the freestyle motocross best-trick competition, which will be moved inside the arena. The BMX dirt competition will be moved from Home Depot Center to Staples Center and will be held inside.

Still undecided is where to relocate the enormous Mega Ramp, on which the popular skateboard big-air competition will be held.
