Dan Cleary broke a scoreless tie in the third period, and Manny Legace handed Colorado its first shutout of the season, leading Detroit past the Avalanche, 3-0, Saturday at Denver.

Legace stopped 28 shots. His fourth shutout of the season and 10th of his career left only two teams that haven’t been blanked this season: Detroit and Dallas.

The Red Wings are 3-0 against the Avalanche this season, but unlike their first two meetings, when they combined for 17 goals, this one was dominated by defense and missed opportunities on the power play.

Detroit, ranked No. 2 in the league in penalty killing, killed off all seven of Colorado’s power plays.

Through the first two periods, Colorado managed only five shots in five power plays, drawing the ire of the Pepsi Center crowd. Colorado finally put some life into its fans when it got off three shots on its sixth power play, but Legace (22-6-2), who turned 33 on Saturday, kept making the saves.

St. Louis 4, Dallas 3 -- Barret Jackman scored in overtime at home to give the Blues their second straight victory.

Jackman’s third goal of the season also ended the Stars’ six-game winning streak. He took a pass from Keith Tkachuk, and his shot deflected off of Stephane Robidas’ stick and past Marty Turco.

Minnesota 6, Phoenix 4 -- Marian Gaborik and Wes Walz each scored twice in Minnesota’s four-goal second period at Glendale, Ariz.

Walz also had two assists, and Todd White and Pierre-Marc Bouchard also scored to help the Wild win its second straight after a three-game losing streak.

Montreal 2, Boston 0 -- Andrei Markov scored in his return to the lineup at Montreal, and former King Cristobal Huet got his first shutout for the Canadiens.

Markov, who sat out eight games because of a shoulder injury, scored a power-play goal 10:22 into the third period, putting a rebound of Alex Kovalev’s shot off the left post into an open left side.

New York Islanders 5, Pittsburgh 4 -- Miroslav Satan notched the seventh hat trick of his career and added a shootout goal to help the Islanders get the win on the road.

Satan scored all three of his regulation goals on the power play for New York, which has won four of its last five.

Sidney Crosby scored his 26th goal after sitting out Pittsburgh’s last game because of flu.

New York Rangers 4, Philadelphia 3 -- Jaromir Jagr scored 1:24 into overtime at Philadelphia to lift New York to its third straight victory.

Toronto 4, New Jersey 2 -- Ed Belfour made 36 saves at Toronto and Alex Ponikarovsky scored twice, leading the Maple Leafs to their second victory in 12 games.

Tomas Kaberle and Chad Kilger also scored for Toronto, which was mired in its worst stretch since winning three times in a 24-game span from Jan. 11 to March 8, 1996.

Atlanta 6, Florida 4 -- At Atlanta, Ilya Kovalchuk scored his NHL-leading 36th goal and the Thrashers ended a seven-game losing streak.
